Silent tsunami |

 Tsunami is defined as a natural phenomenon consisting of a series of waves generated when water in a lake or sea is rapidly displaced on a massive scale. Earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions and large meteorite impacts all have potential to generate a tsunami. The effects of a tsunami can range from unnoticeable to devastating. Tsunamis can cause different damages on the earth surface and can even cause death of individuals. Silent tsunamis like real tsunamis regularly strike the developing world with ferocity as devastating as natural disaster which causes vast damages. Silent tsunamis of famine, disease, poverty and violence are silent because they rarely make the news among the non-issues of the day. Most news prioritizes political issues and conflict rather than what is really happening in our society. Like in the Philippines, nowadays if you watch the television all you can see are faces of PGMA and other politicians aiming political power and dominance. Almost half of the airing time of the news shows tackles these issues. Unlike natural disasters which swipe people’s lives in just a snap, these silent tsunamis are killing the people little by little. Their suffering is prolonged that is why it is considered more brutal. This event usually occurs in 3rd world countries whose economy is not that stable to sustain everything that their country and countrymen needs. Ongoing poverty in 3rd world countries is as debilitating and destructive to residents as any natural disaster. According to Kofi Annan, "Goals are not utopian. They are eminently available." We Filipinos, no matter where we are, must have oneness in our crusade to prevent those silent tsunamis from hitting our planet again. |
