PRAGUE, Czech Republic (AP) -- Leading astronomers declared Thursday that Pluto is no longer a planet under historic new guidelines that downsize the solar system from nine planets to eight.

After a tumultuous week of clashing over the essence of the cosmos, the International Astronomical Union stripped Pluto of the planetary status it has held since its discovery in 1930. The new definition of what is -- and isn't -- a planet fills a centuries-old black hole for scientists who have labored since Copernicus without one.

Science is still evolving.  I guess things we learned a decade ago may not be relevant anymore.

Take for example, Philippine History.  I grew up learning in Social Studies that the 10 datus from Borneo were one of our forefathers.  That doesn't come off as tenet now.

well, the earth still is... what i fear most is when the time comes that "mother earth" is no longer a planet....

Micky Mouse is very furious about this... he'll change Pluto's name to Jupiter. For sure it is not a dwarf planet.

oo nga eh. pinagulo lang nila lahat. anyway, the study shows us that we are learing new things everyday, and some of the things we know to be true are really... just scientists' guesses....  ::)

as they say,  nothing is constant in this world moreso in the world of science where we are basing everything from studies done about the past.  considering that not all scientific data are always complete, there's bound to be more changes in the future.

the best we can teach the generation of today is to be more open minded and sensible.  i guess that also would have to apply to the oldies too since they are most prone to resist change.
