If you are techie, you have probably used at least one open source application. Today, most companies are giving away their codes to the open source community. This just proves that through open source, products are completed faster without sacrificing quality. And not to mention, no capital needed. Take a look for example at Mozilla Firefox. It emmediately became popular because it's faster, more secure, and it has better features.CMS or content management system is another type of application that has gone open source. There's probably more than 10 open source CMS out there. You can check opensourcecms.com to see some these applications. But, most of these CMS cannot be considered a CMS yet. Although they are moving to that arena. Most of them are good depending on how the user understands how to use it. Yes! even though CMS is supposed to make it easy for webmasters, there's still a need for learning. Stepping few years back, creating a website would take you months to complete. You have to write codes or create static html for the entire project. Today, you don't even have to code the whole thing. Just design your template and look for the right plugins for your website. Or you can develop your own plugins if what you need does not exist. Majority of these tools are written in PHP which is pretty easy to develop. PHP has similar framework with ASP and JSP. Aside from CMS, there's a couple of CRM tools. If you are familiar with SAP, this is the kind of tool that companies pay for millions of dollars. But keep your money first! Several open source are existing. Take a look at SugarCRM at sugarcrm.com. It may not be as par as what SAP does, but it surely does it for small to medium businesses. There are also tools for project management. You don't need to buy Microsoft Project because there are several web-based systems like dotProject or PHProjekt. Some of these systems are not yet completed, but they are already usable for task management. Certainly, open source open the doors for entrepreneurs who wants to use collaborative technology but can't afford SAP or Microsoft tools. With the increasing developers with passion for open source, one day all softwares will be free to use. This explains why some companies are lobbying for software patents. They are trying to protect their businesses from the open source force. Well, let say goodluck to them.
