Muntinlupa City- Last March 15 to 17, 2006, The Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM), the infectious and tropical disease research arm of the Department of Health, had held its 2nd Postgraduate Course on the Laboratory Infectious Diseases at the RITM Auditorium in Filinvest Corporate City, Alabang, Muntinlupa City. With the theme "The Laboratory in the Forefront of Emerging and Re-emerging Infections", the course had featured updates, lectures, laboratory demonstrations and workshops on emerging and re-emerging viral, bacterial and parasitic diseases such as avian influenza, meningococcemia, SARS coronavirus, multi-drug resistant tuberculosis and schistosomiasis among others.

The course was very timely on which it tackled a lot of issues regarding the worldwide crisis of the Avian influenza (H5N1 strain) diagnosis, surveillance, prevention and other topics that have been relevant for the past few years in the Philippines and had played a significant role in our public health awareness.

Over three hundred (300) participants have gathered from around the Philippines. This event was well attended by doctors, medical technologists and other healthcare workers who are in the frontlines battling against against these diseases.
