BACOLOD CITY - Due to deteriorating economic conditions and the precipitate decline in earnings by physicians nationwide, 380 doctors in Negros Occidental have chosen to enrol in nursing courses.

This month, 33 of them would be graduating as nurses, ready to take their board examinations, pass the same and eventually become registered nurses (RNs.)

Taking nursing courses means studying for four more years on top of the eight years of baccalaureate and medical courses and about four more years of residency and training.

However, they are taking the plunge to nursing all because they will have better chances of landing jobs in the United States, Europe and the Middle East.

Nursing jobs now net no less than $2,000 monthly in the US, and with extra hours put on their work, along with some odd jobs along the way, they may earn double the amount.

Filipino doctors working in the US have been experiencing severe problems as the Medicaid program has led to reductions in medical fees and, eventually, their incomes have been slashed.

The era of expensive medical fees has apparently ended in the US, considered to be one of the world’s most health-conscious nations.

Once in the US, these Visayan doctors may eventually get to practice their being physicians after spending years as medical assistants.

Top Filipino surgeons say that most of their colleagues work as nurses first and later turn become assistants in emergency and operating rooms. Many US doctors know that their nurses are actually physicians whose talents need not deteriorate as they don’t do medicine.

They are only part of over 2,000 doctors in Western Visayas who have enrolled in nursing because they now realize that nurses easily get employment and earn much abroad. (Edith B. Colmo)
